“When devils, wizards or jugglers deceive the sight, they are said to cast glamour o'er the eyes of the spectator”
Allan Ramsay
Hello. My name is Pearl, and I've been drawing pictures and painting for as long as I can remember. As a child, my creativity helped me make to sense of my vivid imagination, where reality and fantasy often became indistinguishable. School was a lonely place for a daydreamer like me, but my pencils and paper were always my steadfast companions.
A teenage crush on a magician and the discovery of the Royal Opera House ignited my passion for theatre, and I elected to study theatre design at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design in London, where I found a tribe of mavericks like me. The city of London, with its tough-love lessons and sense of audacious adventure, helped me to find my identity and creative voice. I learned about art, music, storytelling, character development and, most importantly – people.
After selling out my costume drawings at my graduate show, I began to exhibit my paintings, and in the following years, my work took me around the world.
Infusing the fantastical with a sharply contemporary twist, my artwork draws inspiration from the fairytale illustrations of the 1800s through to the dynamic world of contemporary cartoon and comic art. My distinctive style is characterised by sinuous, flowing lines that create stylised figures, brought to life with rich, luminous colours. By blending avant-garde aesthetics with elements of glamour and fantasy, I craft dreamlike, atmospheric pieces that are enriched with narrative depths and a touch of dark humour.
I primarily work with mixed media, which usually includes vibrant acrylics, lustrous inks, and expressive graphite, often enhanced with appliqué and glitter for added texture and shine. My striking and vivid imagery often celebrates those who dare to be different, makes a bold statement, and sparks conversation and intrigue.
My work delves into themes of magic, enchantment, and the hidden depths of our own psyches, appealing to those who see beyond the surface of everyday life. The quirky, charismatic nature of my art resonates with individuals who think differently and cherish a sense of wonder.
